PSM News Letter July 2020

The Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. welcomes its 50th President, Prof. Joel Cabudoy Cornista. He obtained his BS and MS Biology degrees from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He holds a Diploma on International Post-graduate University Course in Microbiology from the Department of Synthetic Chemistry and Biological Chemistry Graduate School of Engineering in Kyoto University, Japan. He has received scholarships from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for his MS in Microbiology and another scholarship from the Japanese Government with the Monbukagakusho Research Scholarship, under the Department of Material and Life Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, Japan. He is currently a faculty of the Biology Department of the College of Arts and Science, University of the Philippines Manila.

Joel is a very active member of PSM since 2009 and has served PSM in different capacities. He served as Division Representative for Microbiology Education (2009-2019), Auditor for (2013-2014) and Vice President (2019-2020). Hehas chaired the Cluster 1 Division for several years that led to several very successful Cluster 1 Symposia. He is also the PSM Representative to the PSM Microbiology Consortium since its conceptualization in 2016. He is currently the Senior Country Ambassador for American Society for Microbiology (ASM). He is a Specialist Microbiologist of the Philippine Academy for Microbiology (PAM) and a Fellow of the American Society for Microbiology Leadership Program for International Educators.

What is more interesting is, Joel, a native of Tacloban, Leyte, is only a year and 10-day old when PSM was founded on October 14, 1971. His cheerfulness and positiveness is very “infectious” that attracts people around him. He makes sure that his fun antics will make everyone happy and having fun while having a quality output. He focuses on the strengths of any situation that is laid down on him and uses that as an opportunity to move forward with the tasks. A good and dear friend to almost everyone, this fun-loving person will surely bring joy and happiness as PSM marks another milestone. Cheers to Joel and on to the road to PSM’s 50th during this New Normal
