PAM co-hosted 2 events : 4th National Biotechnology Education Conference For Teachers (nbect) And 2nd National Biotechnology Quiz Contest For High School

Slide2The 4th National Biotechnology Education Conference for Teachers (NBECT) and the 2nd National Biotechnology Quiz Contest were held simultaneously last November 29, 2012 at the Gateway Suites, Araneta Center, Quezon City. The conference was attended by 103 teachers, 34 coaches and 68 high school students from different schools all over the country together with 5 delegates from DILG. The officers and members of Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM) served as organizers and facilitators. PAM Chair Dr. Virginia L. Barraquio gave the Welcome Remarks while DA-PIU OIC Director, Dr. Candida B. Adalla delivered her message on the role of teachers in enhancing Biotechnology Education and serving as sources of  information on the benefits of products from modern biotechnology.

Lecture-demonstration on DNA extraction from banana and lectures on: southern transfer and hybridization, restriction enzyme digestion and molecular cloning, SDS-PAGE and Western immunoblotting, Polymerase Chain Reaction and plant transformation were delivered by Drs. C.T. Hedreyda and Vermando M. Aquino and Ms Mitsu Sarmago of NIMBB, UP Diliman and Drs. Antonio C. Laurena and V.P. Migo of UPLB.

The quiz contest was participated by 35 high school teams from Quezon, Laguna, Cavite, Palawan, Rizal, Cebu, Central Mindanao, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Baguio City, Camarines Sur, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Metro Manila. The winners were:
First Place :      UP Rural High School
Second Place:   Philippine Science High School Bicol Region
Third Place:     Philippine Science High School Central Mindanao
